Elections Canada Refuses to Collect Money Owed Taxpayers by Political Parties
When is the last time anyone was told by the government that they “refuse to take your money”? Documents have recently surfaced indicating that in a bizarre case, the federal Conservative Party is suing Elections Canada for refusing to accept nearly $600,000 in in duplicate GST rebates.
For those of you who probably think that you read that incorrectly, you did not. The government (via Elections Canada) is refusing to accept repayment for money that was overpaid to the Conservative Party. Making the logic of Elections Canada even more dizzying is its own defence that the Conservative Party repaying the amount owed would “create and unfair playing field”. “Unfair to whom?” one might ask. Seemingly, it would be “unfair” to the Conservatives for having to pay it back while the other parties do not, which leads to a screamingly obvious solution, that Elections Canada should require all parties to repay the duplicated rebate.

When has anything that doesn’t make sense in gov’t made sense to the average person…
Where is the MSM on this issue? $600k isn’t exactly a small sum and you’d think they’d be all over Harpers Conservatives as soon as something like this came to light… “even more dizzying is its own defence that the Conservative Party repaying the amount owed would “create an unfair playing field”.” suggests the NDP, Liberal, Block, and even the Green party “double dipped” on the GST…so that’s the media angle of not covering this??? although the Conservatives are trying to pay back $600k those other party’s must be hiding over a million combined if they used the same GST rebates…which undoubtedly they did…
Whoooo-eeee this one really stinks, looks like the Conservatives are trying to do the right thing. The rest of the political parties better “pony up”. Just try to owe 100. to revenue Canada the mail never stops. Whoever is in charge should be fired.
the reverse math on 600k means they spent 12 approx million during the last election for which they claimed twice for the 5% GST… which they are now trying to correct… so if one reviewed the expense submissions and could find a total the Conservatives spent 12 million on then the similar columbs may provide what the approx numbers the other parties double dippered on…
hmmm….need to go look that up later today and get back to here with the numbers if they’re obvious
Good catch DF!
