Kicking Taxes and Taking Names: How did your MP vote on 10%er Junk-Mail?
Well those who claim that the Conservatives cannot do anything too taxpayer-friendly because the opposition won’t let them, please take a seat. Gather-round the fire as we roast the marshmallow logic used to keep small-c conservatives in line.
A Liberal motion to end the practice of taxpayer-funded MP junk-mail – oft known as 10%ers – passed with the support of the Bloc QuĂ©bĂ©cois and NDP, with every single Conservative in the House voting against it. This no-brainer move to end a wasteful entitlement for MPs was supported by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) and anyone who not only hates getting junk-mail, but having to pay for it with their own taxes to boot. MP junk-mail even won the CTF’s federal Teddy Waste Award this year.
Some Conservatives have excused themselves from this predicament, pointing to the opposition parties’ motives. Find me a party without one. Ending MP junk-mail is good policy – regardless of partisan motives – as was the doomed Conservative attempt to end the per-vote subsidy, regardless of what partisan motives they had at the time.
The Conservatives passed up an excellent opportunity to slice a stip of bacon off the taxpayer slaughterhouse better known as Parliament.
You can find out how your MP voted HERE.

Worse than that.
Even though Parliament passed the motion, the Conservatives have said they will ignore it and continue to waste our money by using taxpayer dollars for partisan propaganda.
We know the story on this. In past the liberals started this practice and the NDP particulariy and relatedly at the municipal level have mastered it. The conservatives have been doing this lately and it does provide advantage but on principle it is better to get rid of it. What is really funny though is to see the liberals cut their own throats since we know they like to ’squeeze’ everything when they are in power. So now we have them voting against their own best long-term interests, which I like this idea. Let’s see what else we can get rid of…
Seriously, why is the CPC fighting this?
Are they just doing this to spite the opposition, or is there a sensible reason for it?
I’m confused, and kinda worried that someone in the PMO is losing their common sense in the name of partisanship.

The motion was not just about 10%ers it was partisan bs,
why would the Govt MPs vote for this?:
”That, in the opinion of this House, the government should show leadership in reducing government waste by rolling-back its own expenditures on massive amounts of partisan, taxpayer-paid government advertising, ministerial use of government aircraft, the hiring of external “consultants”, and the size of the Cabinet, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Privy Council Office, which together could represent a saving to taxpayers of more than a billion dollars; and to show its own leadership in this regard, the House directs its Board of Internal Economy to take all necessary steps to end immediately the wasteful practice of Members sending mass mailings, known as “ten-percenters”, into ridings other than their own, which could represent another saving to taxpayers of more than $10 million.
AND,
if you watched QP today, PMSH said yes, the Govt supports getting rid of 10%ers.
AND
if you watched Power Play, the wording of the motion was partisan so they did not support it,
and our Pierre said not only does the Govt want to get rid of 10%ers they also support gettings rid of all subsidies to political parties…..smell like a warning shot of a Govt motion coming?
Funny how the only 10%ers I ever see come from Jack Layton himself! I get one EVERY month! Hypocrite!
Everyone calm down..You are arguing about a mirage bill. It is not even about getting rid of the 10 %ers .It is about stopping the opposition parties from sending their 10%ers to each others ridings…As if an NDP riding is 100% NDP.Or a Liberal riding is 100% Liberal..They don’t want the other voters to know what the government is doing for them.It is all a mirage folks. The real bill will be put forth by the Government to stop the vote subsidy…
